Our focus centers on research, education, and outreach in the Interior Highlands. The Highlands are an upland region in central North America located in parts of Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. They encompass several unique ecoregions that are rich in human and natural history alike–the Ozark Highlands, Boston Mountains, Arkansas River Valley, and Ouachita Mountains. Despite a growing human population, much of the Interior Highlands remains rural and wild, resulting in the presence of diverse flora and fauna.
